Feeling Like I’ve Not Slept Lately…

Granted, I don’t sleep much. However the past 2 days I’ve been in a semi-zombie state but still making progress and rocking forward. My brain just feels off from where I want it to be. I’ve looked at my food and supplement intake to see if something’s impacted this sleep or how I feel but can’t come up with any explanation.

In fact I’ve not even taken GABA before bed which I was doing for a while. Well, I’m not going to over-think into this when I have things to do and feel like a zombie. Perhaps it’s just another step towards growth. Perhaps this is what happens as I approach 42. Yeah I’d not really thought much of that, perhaps both my body and mind are needing more than the few hours of sleep I normally feel OK with. Last week I’m up at 5 every day and working out, this week barely ‘aware’ as I wake to an alarm at 6. That’s the other difference – I’m depending on an alarm. I’ve always had one as a “safeguard” but don’t like to depend on it except when necessary traveling. I usually wake up and turn it off before it’s ever even close to alarming. I mean who wants to wake to an alarm, what a horrifying experience. OK I digress. My body is probably trying to take care of itself and is speaking to me. Now it’s time to learn to listen within.

Why Am I Gaining More Weight?

Considering my aggressive exercise adoption and increased focus on lower carbohydrate and higher protein dieting, I’m somewhat surprised to see my scale shouting “210 210 TWO TEN TWO TEN” at me when just a few days ago I was in the wonderful state of ketosis and down to 204. I know there’s simple things that may be contributing to my weight gain, and have considered the following:

  1. Water retention while adapting to new healthy lifestyle.
  2. Hidden carbs inside vitamin supplements or elsewhere.
  3. Muscle growth is exceeding reduction of body pounds.
  4. Stress and anxiety is causing me to retain more weight.
  5. Body not playing well with artificial sweeteners maybe.
  6. Many number of reasons I’m not going to worry about.
I’ve looked at what I’m putting into my body and overall I do eat some Greek yogurt with fruit in the morning which isn’t the lowest of carbs, but since it’s Green yogurt it’s ~5 carbs/serving for me and fruits are berries which are very low in carbohydrates. I did notice that my glucosomine supplement has 3 carbs/serving with 2 servings a day recommended, so there’s 6 there. Overall we’re not talking more than 25 carbs.
I assume excessive carbs should be burning with my workouts.
I should seriously consider eliminating artificial sweeteners to see if this is possibly an issue contributing to this increased weight as I’ve recently been including some diet beverages and this might be causing spikes. I’ve read before that artificial sweeteners can impact the areas of the brain receptive to actual sugar and consequently stimulate the body to react as if its had sugar, including undesirable impact from not having it. OK note to self, ditch the sugar-free artificially sweetened beverages ASAP.

Other than taking a closer look at my diet, I’m in need of increasing my exercise throughput. Since I’m getting up extra early for my P90X workouts (5am lately), this does leave a little more potential later in the day for bike riding or other cardiovascular commitments, so going to see what more on a fitness level I can “squeeze in” today.

I do feel better with what I’m doing, but like to be able to measure this too!

I Have Way Too Many Blogs IMO!

Been up all night and trying to convince myself that insomnia is actually a productivity enhancing tool, that I can squeeze in an extra workout, an extra blog post, some more emails or get a head start on my day. Realistically, I may not be too far off though energy levels are lowered in this state. I’ve noticed my mind sometimes balances itself out this way; keeping me calm to best manage current opportunities and obligations.

Yikes I’ve already digressed from my subject line… OK regarding the blogs, for the past several years and quite aggressively over the past 3 I’ve been building out a massive niche blog infrastructure with the goal of selling lots of online real estate billboards. Since I’ve taken a new career this year and blogs and selling online ad space is much less my focus I’m looking to reorganize my online world better.

I really focus on a small percentage of my blogs, in fact I’ve created a few blogs just to manage and point to my other blogs! The best place I’d recommend anyone to start with would be Darren’s Blogs, which brings together the top 12 sites or so which I’m most active on, of course including this one!
